Why I Decided to Kind of Fist Fight Tom When He Wouldn't Shut Up
Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s god-awful husband, had us all go out to town. I suppose this is because he knew of my relationship with his wife. Picture this, we were all circled around the table, eating, and I guess it was quite obvious that there was something deeper going on. I tried to get Daisy to tell Tom about us- but she freaked out. I calmed her down and lit her cigarette, and she complimented me by saying I was always “so cool”. This was most likely when he knew his wife was no longer in love with him. He angrily told us all to get in the cars and head to town, we practically raced there. He was furious. I learned he also had me investigated. Rather hypocritical if you ask me, why can he have an affair without any consequences, but as soon as someone else does, there’s an issue? He can’t be upset when having two women doesn’t work out. Anyhow, while in town, I got into a heated argument with him, Daisy tried to stop it. He questioned me. He told me about how he examined my past, he went on and on about how I had sold alcohol illegally, how I wasn’t really an ‘Oxford Man’. He wouldn’t shut up when Daisy asked him to either. He tried to make me seem like an awful man that no one should ever love. Oh how he was wrong.
After this happened, I tried explaining to him that Daisy doesn’t love him, and never has, never will. She only loves me. Perhaps I was a little overconfident during that exchange? He went absolutely ballistic, screaming at me that she loves him. What a dirty little cheater. Tom, old sport, if you ever read this, the only respectable thing about you is your money- I know I said it to your face but now I’m saying it again just to really get my point across. Anyway, much to my dismay, Daisy wasn’t able to admit that she never loved Tom. She said she once loved him, but also me too. The verbal argument between Tom and I then turned physical, and it was also then that I realized something in Daisy had changed.

Jay, I'm sorry. You used to be my only love but things have changed. Our love was never blessed. My parents were never supportive of me dating you. You left Louisville before I had a chance to say goodbye. I got your letter the day before my wedding. I was crushed and heart-broken by your letter but I could not do anything. If it were ten years ago, I would go with you for anything. But now I just can't give up the life that I am used to. I have a family and a child. I still love you but you wanted too much from me.
